Author Should this newbie attend the ETC Conference?

I would like to have some opinions on attending the ETC conference.

I have always wanted to learn programing. At the present time I own
a small payroll service and am licensing a software program to
operate. I have alway wanted to create my own program and want to
know if the clarion community is a good choice.

My goal would be first and formost to meet the personalities in the
community.

Learn the potential of using Clarion in such a project.

Begin to understand the process of actually creating a custom program.

And no I am not a programer, but I have a really good Idea of how the
perfect program would work.

I have reviewed the schedule of topics and yes I have no idea what
they are.

your comments are appreciated Loelg@nexpay.com.

Loel,

Well, as a non-programmer, you would definitely be in over your head
with the agenda of classes presented. <g> but I still think you could
benefit, read on....

Even though technically, you'd be stretched just to listen to
conversations, I'm sure you'd find in short order what an extremely
helpful and resourceful the Clarion community is as a whole.

Attendees to this conference will include a Who's Who list of Clarion
innovators, along with a contingent of programmers yearning to stretch
their knowledge and implementation.

You will probably meet a number of developers who already customize
client's programs with your type of needs.

I'm sure you'll get some elementary pointers, but without programming
background, you'll definitely be at a divantage. Take an extremely
large notebook, and write, write, write, even if you don't understand
what you're writing now, stick with it long enough, the notes will
become clearer in the future! <g>

User interface, business rules, etc - it's good for programmers to hear
directly from business owners, end users, what they want to use.

Well, as I started this reply, "you would definitely be in over your
head with the agenda of classes presented" but that is not to say a
number of benefits could not still be gained - you would gain some
wonderful contacts for the future, some would say the cookout is worth
the price of admission <g>

If you do go, consider bringing a copy of your present programs on CD-
ROM if possible to show prospective developers who specialize in your
area what you would like to see in future versions - also some technical
information about what languages, tools are used to develop your
programs now would be helpful.

Hi Loel,

Go ahead and attend. It will be a great learning experience for you. You
first and foremost have to be able to think conceptually "in the abstract"
and have a pretty good memory to remember all kinds of "stuff" while working
with your programming project to do it.

IMNSHO, Clarion is the easiest system to "get immediately productive" with
bar none. However, to do that you must learn "The Clarion Way". <g> Using
the Clarion Development System compares a lot to using any other "dedicated"
application such as a word processor or a spreadsheet.

You then need to learn some "relational database management" theory along
with how to use CW's IDE (Integrated Development Environment), and finally,
how to write some very "understandable" (to me anyway <g> ) English language
like "data manipulation" code into the provided "code embed points" in the
templates. Then it's off you go.

If the above fits you, <g> and you spend 30 minutes a day learning and
experimenting, inside of 30 days you will/should be productive using CW.
IMNSHO, 60 days at most. <g>

I will be there so if you do go just look me up and we can visit.
