This seemed to work:
'4A1,X1'{quad}fmt ,[.5]{each}'ABC' 'DEF' 'GHI' 'JKL' 'MNOP'
Leaving out the ,[.5]{each} was what gave you the columns.
The 4 is, of course, the length of the longest item, so it may need to
change for different arguments.
Your spacing doesn't seem to be consistent, so I'm not sure how important
spacing is to you. If you want more spaces, X2 wold give you another
space.
