I have been working for more than 15 years with apl + 2 STSTC,
MANUGISTIC, etc. In all documentations of every version, we are told
that it is possible to edit any character of quad AV by typing
maj-esc, the reference in quad AV and letter A not only for
initializing a key, what perfectly walks, but even to obtain the
character on the screen! That is false, it has never walked on any
version. Has anybody experimented that?

it has been a long time since I used STSC's wonderful APL*Plus,
but my recollection is that holding down the Alt key, while typing
the AV code >on the numeric keypad< would display the desired
character

or maybe that should be the Alt-GR key? try them both, I guess

P.S: "ça marche" is better translated as "it works" -- translate it
as "it walks", you will confuse the average anglophone

What you say must be true on APLPLUS, but not in APLPLUS*2; the only
correct method is this one such described in my precedent text.
Unhappily, it does not work,"ça ne marche pas"; nothing is more
difficult than to translate the gallicisms into anglicisms!!!

the method I described is part of the Windows operating system --
you need to have NumLock ON, and hold the Alt key down while typing
-all- the digits, and the character should appear on the screen when you
lift your finger from the Alt-key

if that doesn't work, I shall have to dig my manuals out of the attic
(that may take some time)

very true, and vice versa

all the best . . . /phil

I think your manuals are not useful in this case. APLPLUS*2 is not a
windows product but a DOS product working with Pharlap dos-extender.
All the keys are modified by the program and consequently the rules of
windows are unknown. I think you know APLPLUS*3 which is a pure
windows product and perhaps it is possible to do so.
Friendly yours

Yes -- I realised that after I'd posted my reply -- I have the manuals
for APL*Plus/II -- the DOS product -- we used it to address 32 Mbyte
of memory, when Windows 3.1 could only address 16 Mbyte
(that should say "I -think- I have the manuals .." )

the Alt+NumPad procedure I described is part of the DOS keyboard
driver, and (since Windows 3.1 was just another DOS application)
it works under Windows as well

"pure"?? can a Windows application really be "pure"?

Probably an acception different between our languages.
Pure windows means for me: an application conceived for working under
control of windows as operating system, whereas APL2 was conceived for
working under DOS
