Well, I'll answer that when you answer this: "my computer doesn't
work - what's wrong?"
What operating system? What version of awk? What is the script that
fails? Do other scripts fail? What is the minimum code that produces
the problem? What is the error message?

Remove "gearbox.maem." from address - that one is dead

All of those questions are interesting, and, in a purely theoretical
sense, should be answered. But we all know the answers to all of them,
and we know that the real problem is: You are using Solaris.
This has already been confirmed by the OP.

That makes it pretty much the best error message ever. As well as
being iconic for it wording its apparent lack usefulness, it actually
summarises the entire problem in one :-)
