help combining fields from two files using awk

i have used awk a little bit but have never
used it with more than one file. wanted to know
if someone could help with the following:

i have file1 with just one field
and file2 with 20 fields.
i am trying to put the one field
in file1 next to $12 of file2 after line 1000.
i use excel to combine the two fields now.
can awk do this? any response is appreciated.
