Author Updating files and renaming old.

We are running a fairly large Web system and we update quite regularly. This issue I am facing is we want to keep the older files in the same dir just rename them with a time stamp. Is there a script I can run that will copy the files from my temp and replace the old file but rename the old file with a time stamp? This is a Unix Platform
