semi newbie: intermittent segmentation fault with awk

I've got a tight little simulation written in awk and am running it on
a number of different inputs, all with the same form. On most inputs
everything is grand and I get the expected output. On a couple I get a
segfault
with no other complaint. The inputs causing the segfault don't seem to
possess any obvious differences from the others that work fine. Any
idea on how to coerce awk to give me more info or what other things to
check and look into? My own verbose internal diagnostics turned on
right before the crash show nothing out of the ordinary in the
processing. TIA.
