Thanks for the heads up.

I've spawned multiple runs onto different machines and surveyed
versions on each of them - only one is running GNU awk, all the rest
have the old mawk version. The original development and test on small
problem instances didn't show this problem, only when the real inputs
came through and they are pretty big. The machine with gawk is turning
out results with no segfaults. There are some good, segfault free
results though on some of the mawk machines so I can't completely rule
out pathologic data.

Valgrind is a good idea. Thanks, Jurgen!
