Author Editor supporting code changes via a patch deck and update utility

Greetings all:

I have some projects where I would like to keep every line
of source code changes (references to deletions, insertions
and code replacements with respect to a base source file)
in a file (the "patch deck" to use a very old term) so that
it is easier to carry changes forward when someone issues a
new version of the base code.

Does anyone know of an editor that supports such a thing,
especially if the editor could display 3 or more pages at
the same time (display the base source, the patch deck and
dynamically display the resulting file)?

I realize that I can come close with a DIFF utility; what
do people use for a DIFF program ?

John.
