Author self-written user registry for different application servers?

Hi,

I have some general questions:

Is it possible (in practice, not only in theory!) to implement a user
registry, which can be plugged into different application servers
(JBoss and Websphere in my case)?

Is JAAS the right API for this task?

Are there ready to use open source implementations?

Please don't ask "why don't you use LDAP?" or something like that. We
already have customers using LDAP, this is not the problem. My task is
to find (or implement) a lightweight and self-contained solution, which
runs on different application servers.

Christof
