The message I sent was supposed to be canceled...I accidentally hit the
wrong keys and sent it, then found and canceled it -- obviously without
success -- because I didn't have at my immediate fingertips a list of
what Java versions came in which versions of Mac OS X.

It's quite common for Mac users to refer to OS X versions after 10.1 by
their "cat" names (10.0 and 10.1 had such names, but they weren't widely
used). 10.2 was Jaguar and ran up through 10.2.8. 10.3 was Panther and
went through 10.3.9. 10.4 is called Tiger and has thus far updated to
10.4.7. 10.5, due out next year, is called Leopard.

At <http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2002/tn2110.html> is a tech
note on identifying Java versions in Mac OS X. A table there identifies
the versions of Java that shipped with each. The second seems to
suggest that 1.4.1 is as far as 10.2 can go. That seems consistent with
the list at <http://developer.apple.com/java/download/> as well. I
can't say positively whether it's possible to install 1.4.1 or 1.4.2
updates on that particular system -- only that the installer should
reject the attempt if it's not supported.

The last all-in-one form iMac was produced from 2001 until it was
discontinued in March 2003, according to the Mactracker program I have.
But if yours is blue it's probably older than that one. As a result,
it's questionable whether it could support Mac OS X 10.3, which would
definitely allow you to get 1.4.2.
