Author JVM Install "succeeds" but Java doesn't work in browsers.

I am having major problems getting the latest version of Java to work
on my wife's system, It apparently installs fine, either direct from
the site or off-line The test applet reports "you are using an old
version of Java techno" (the message is cut off here at the edge of
the applet's bounding box), but then goes on to report the correct,
current, version and revision number. The usual animation doesn't
appear in the test applet, and other java-requiring applets (games
etc) don't work. Symptoms are identical in IE 6.0 and a newly
installed copy of FireFox 1.5, so I don't think it's browser-related.

I am running Windows XP Home with all the latest patches and installed
the JVM with no other programs running and Norton Internet Security
disabled, rebooting and clearing the browsers' caches before and after
installation. Does anyone have any clues or suggestions?

I have just discovered that trying to test the (previously working)
Java installation on my main system (XP Pro, Norton AV but no Internet
Security) results in an identical error. I haven't tried reinstalling.
Any wisdom will be appreciated!

What test applet? What is the URL?
Here is one from Sun that is commonly used..
<http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml>
(I ask because it is possibly a problem in the applet
itself, or the deployment of the applet.)

Have you rebooted since installation of the new Java?
I doubt it will fix the problem - but it is worth a try.

That is indeed the URL of the test applet that I am using. As noted in
the original message, I rebooted before and after java installation.

Sorry. Missed that detail.

I cannot see any mention of what exact version you are installing.
My IE is reporting '1.5.0_08'* at that applet, with
'Congratulations. The latest version is installe' (also cut off)

* As that the version you are referring to?

Are you sure that it says 1.5.0_08, not 1.5.0_06? Update 6 is the
latest advertised version available for download, and is what my
browsers are reporting.

Yes. Positive.

....hmmm. Open the 'Java (TM) Control Panel' from the
main Win. 'Control Panel' and check the 'Update' tab.
Ensure that 'Check for updates automatically' is checked.

It might be that Sun has decided to distribute _06, then
simply update (what might be only a few minor classes)
for the _07 & _08 updates via the web.

The box is checked. If I click 'Update Now' on the same tab, I get a
dialog that says: "You already have the latest Java pllatform on this
system". (I get much the same message if I try to rerun the install
without explicitly uninstalling Java first,)

The update mechanism likes to play such tricks. Sun has released _8 some
ws ago. Interestingly the Netbeans bundle still ships with _7 and
J2EE with _6. For the whole mess:
