Author problems with Java? newbie

I think I'm having problems with my Java. I am constantly getting a message
that I "need to install Java Virtual Machine" when I attempt to open certain
files or do something. I also cannot entirely delete my Java runtime
enviroment. I would like to just reinstall Java. How could I do this with
my limited knowledge of it?
Thanks

What operating system do you have? Windows, Mac OSX, Linux? I'm
guessing windows. In your control panel you can add & remove programs.
click on that and then you should be able to remove any java jre or
any program for that fact.

hopefully that helps.
