Author Duplicate files...by the dozen
David

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but... I've been using jv16 Power Tools to clean up a machine and my
does it find some crud. One tool searches out duplicate files, it found that there are hundreds of duplicates, many of
them in C:\Program Files\Java... For instance:

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\lib\zi\Asia\Kuching
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_2\lib\zi\Asia\Kuching
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0\lib\zi\Asia\Kuching

And the list of cities goes on and on in all parts of the world. Do I need any of this stuff? Why should Kuching, or
Perth, or Singapore, or any other far flung city need 3 seemingly duplicte files on my machine? Am I right in thinking
that each file in NTFS takes up 32K no matter how small it is? With hundreds of these things we're talking Gigs! Can I
delete them them all, or at least all except one of each?

Thanks,

David

This tool?
<http://www.macecraft.com/jv16powertools2005/>

[1] Sure isn't! Seems to have everything to do with Windows
and nothing to do with Java. For support for that tool, try
the manufacturer <http://www.macecraft.com/support/>.

For what it's worth, it appears that you have three copies of the JRE (Java
Runtime Environment) installed on this PC, one at level 1.5.0, one at level
1.5.0_2, and one at level 1.5.0_4. That's pretty redundant; normally, the
latest version should be all you need.

I expect that you'd be safe in deleting 1.5.0 and 1.5.0_2 completely. That
would get rid of two-thirds of your files right away and all of the
duplicates.

There is no need to have more than the latest JVM installed. Go into
your control panel and remove the old ones in "remove software"

Thanks for that information. I've downloaded 1.5.0_5, that's a pretty big download, but do I really need all that stuff
just to look at Websites? I'm not developing anything, don't have a Web page, don't intend to either. Maybe I'm a
paranoid control freak, but the less un-needed stuff there is on my hard drive the happier I am.

You actually didn't need that. Roedy's just link-happy with his posting.
You just want the JRE. Get it from sun's website.

http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

You also don't want to be posting to this newsgroup, as it's help with the
java language, not help using java applets.

The minimum file size is 4Kb. (At least, on my system)

You don't need the JDK to look at websites, just the JRE. See
http://mindprod.com/jgloss/jre.html

The JDK is for people who want to write programs, which is what nearly
everyone here is doing.

The description of this group at my site goes on to add..
"The help group is the best one for programmers just starting
in Java." Note that I added the second part, with the
knowledge that most of the posters to c.l.j.help were
learning Java.

I think he was confusing NTFS and FAT16.
