the introduction to Head First Java explains their methodology:
repetition--same thing diff ways, diff media types, multiple senses
emotional context--picutres and concpets in unexpected ways
conversational style v. passively listening
****************************************
*
*they have 50 exercises so you do things*
****************************************
*
multiple leanring styles: big picture v example v procedures, see
repetition
stories so you evaluate and make judgements
challenges and questions that don't always have a straight answer
etc
paraphrased from p xxiv
I've never seen these techniques before and IMHO they're very effective.
in terms of a workbook there's one about patterns which talks about a
fireworks company oozinoz for their examples, forget the title--it's very
challenging. If I think of the title I'll post it.
