problems with list and key realesed repeat

I have a choice component with approximately 10 items. Everytime a
new item is selected by using the down arrow (or selecting by mouse),
a graph is updated depending on the choice. My problem is, when the
down arrow or right arrow key is held down, the graph is constantly
being updated with the selected item. I'm trying to find a way to
prevent the graph from being updated until the arrow button is
actually released. In other words, I'm trying to prevent the user
from being able to scroll through the entire list by holding down an
arrow key. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
