Author Mail problem w/Word files -- very curious

Using Mail for OSX, when I send an e-mail with an attached Word (also
for OSX) file that includes a jpeg within it, the e-mail never reaches
its destination. (It does show up in the Sent folder as having gone
out.) I do not have this problem with Word files that don't include
jpegs, nor do I have this problem with jpegs by themselves. This
happens with with e-mail sent by either of my e-mail accounts -- the
one hosted by my ISP, Ameritech, and the one hosted by Network
Solutions. It happens whether I'm sending to my wife's computer in the
next room, or to myself, or to someone across the world. Word X files
with jpegs embedded in them seem to make the e-mail "get lost" -- no
evidence of it except in my Sent folder. Would this relate to the Spam
settings in Mail, or do they only operate on incoming mail?

For what it's worth, I've had the same problem sending *certain* Word
files (with no jpegs or other figures) via Thunderbird. If I zip the
files, they go through just fine, and they go just fine using my gmail
account. It happens whether I'm sending to someone on the same system or
to someone half way around the world. The specific file in question was
written in WordX. I experimented with saving-As to rename the file. I
copied the entire contents to another file, and still no dice. The
message appears in my Sent folder with no indication that it didn't go
through. Our symin checked the mail server logs, and found no
evidence of problems. It's very annoying to have to send secondary mail
asking if people have received the files I send them.

A friend has a similar problem re Word (in Office 2004). I believe he
uses Mail. He can receive Word files I attach (with Thunderbird)just
fine, but not those from another Mac user (but if I forward her files,
he can open the attachments).

Very mysterious.

I just checked: Zipping files doesn't help in my case.

Hmm. I was going to blame it on your email provider, but it is unlikely
that two or three would drop the same message. Can you send me mail
from each of your accounts. That way I'll be able to see what they have
in common.

My reply-to address is valid. I won't do anything nasty with your email
addresses, etc.

It may be that you are using the same SMTP host for all of your accounts
and that that one mail service is treating those messages as some sort
of malware.

Only on incoming. My guess is that all of your accounts are actually
sending outgoing mail through one system and that system is dropping the
mail for some reason. But that is just a guess.
