Panther MAIL and attachments

| I gather there is no way to prevent Apple's MAIL application from
displaying attachments such as PDFs and JPGs in the body of the
message (the "advanced" option to turn off html doesn't seem to impact
these file types.)???
I hope I'm wrong and some one will tell me how.
I prefer to have all attachments come as attachments, rather than
display in the text. That gives me the choice of when I view it.
thanks

Mail -> Preferences -> Viewing
Uncheck 'Display images and embedded objects in HTML messages.'
It's a good idea to do this even if you like seeing images in emails,
because if you load images that are in a spam email, you're very likely
confirming to the spammer that your email is valid. Thus you'll get more
spam. So it's better to have to click on 'load images' for any mails you
trust, than to have the images autmatically load on those you don't.
(The way it works is that if I send you an email with an image tag like
this in it:
img src="http://some.domain/spamverifierscript.pl?yourEmailAddressHere"
...then my server script can store the yourEmailAddressHere part as
having been successfully delivered before it sends back the image file.)

Not really, no. Whether to display attachments inline or as attachments is
"suggested" by the sending mail program. The receiving program (yours) is
of course under no obligation to honor it, but I see no way to instruct
Mail to never display attachments inline. The setting for HTML has nothing
to do with it, because regular attachments are not specified with HTML.

It doesn't affect attachments.

That's a one time action, though. It doesn't even stick for the same
message.
If I select View as icon, then taverse to another mailbox, then come
back to the first message the attachments are displayed inline again.
I agree with the OP that this is most annoying...

at that point, it's ALREADY in the text of the message, so I don't
think that's the answer.

thanks, this is the first explanation for why this happens.
I don't like it!
Macs are supposed to be about "choice", right?

You DO have choice. Panther MAIL comes free with the OS. You can choose
a different mail client.

very true.
I could also choose to go to Windows instead.
Neither choice is what using Macs "used" to be about.

Windows is always a choice. For those of us who HAVE to use it (at
work) it is never a choice. I had a good day with Windoze today. it
only crashed twice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon,
which is a good day with Windows. There are other email clients for the
Mac. The free stuff that comes with the OS is nice, but never touted to
be the best. I use iPhoto for some things, Photoshop for most, Graphic
Converter for others. What free mac app are you using now for the
Usenet? If you want a different kind of mail client, try Eudora.

If you want a very different one, try Mailsmith.
Great scriptability, no inline display of attachments or graphics, no
html.
It's a great mail client and I use it in a couple of scripted
(automated) workflows, both sending and receiving. I use Apple Mail for
my main client, after using Quickmail Pro, Eudora and Mailsmith in the
past, but that's just personal preference.

While I can't say what's different in our usage, Panther Mail.app does
NOT display attachments inline on my machine(s). I do have "display
images and embedded object in HTML messages" turned off.
It may be that once they have been displayed they've already been
fetched and will be displayed if you reopen the message. Turn it off
and see what happens when new messages come in.
