Quick question about pay gateways

I'm trying to get 2checkout to work with my site and I just want to know
when they say something will be passed back to me does that mean that I need
to have whatever that's being passed back to me, say it passes back
"charge_approved", I need to have that field in my database and it will put
a yes or no in it? Same with whatever else it passes back with whatever
value it pertains.
Real basic question I know, but

none the less...
