PHP SQL - mysql functions missing from php5 on XP!

mysql functions missing from php5 on XP!

I downloaded the latest php5 and tried to use it against my mysql
database.

Though the mysql functions are supposed to have been included, it
claimed that 'mysql_connect' and all the other functions didn't
exist!!!

How could this have happened?
