Author Regarding headers and buffers

Is it possible to do this on one page without using frames, iframes or
javascript. I assume not, but if there is a way, I am curious.

Something like:
1) parse and server a binary file, sending corresponding headers to the
browser in preparation for the content.
2) echo the content
3) on success, flush and echo a "success" message on the same page.

Is this possible. or do I have to rely on AJAX for this? I was thinking
that there may be a way to handle this via buffers, but I can't imagine
how it could be possible to write new headers once they have already
been sent.
