Need image utils but server appears to have none installed! Rv!
|
|
|
| Hi all,
I've tried to call GD services and they fail.
Does anyone have a simple way of scanning the servier to find out what they
have installed.
Check http://www.premierdisco.co.uk/phpinfo.php for a PHPINFO() output
if this helps.
I'd appreciate any help possible in gaining the ability to upload a photo album with
autimatick thimbnails. I'd rather not build them here are there's a few of us that
would be uploading the the album.

I'm no expert at that sort of thing - but from a quick look GD fails
because like you say GD isnt installed on your web server .

Probably best if you contact fasthosts or whatever fasthosts reseller
you use to ask about the issue .

That would have to be a long time ago.
W2k Pro (yes, I use Windows at the moment, a linux server will be used in
about 2 months..) can do it perfectly here, resizing, adding
semi-transparant borders, rotating, the whole lot. And I seem to recall that
at the time on my first encounter (brief at that time) with PHP in 2002 it
wasn't a problem either.
Not that I wouldn't recommend a real server instead of Windows, unless you
really really need COM.

They don't mention that anywhere do they? Seems a major oversight
that they forget to tell folk. I've emailed support for an update.

Email from provider states...

Pain in the butt. Why do they not document this. The bloody services cost the same.
If they'd produced this information in advance I would have went with the *nix server.

| Another email from them...so disappointing a service...
Thanks for contacting us with your support enquiry.
You cant change from Windows to Linux on the standard accounts, you will need to do the following
to have this done:
* Download all your emails and back up your website.
* If you have a DNS or ODBC data source created on your control panel, delete it before
proceeding to the next step.
* Park and delete your domain name from your old control panel:
http://xtreme.fasthosts.co.uk/kbv.exe?wrap=1&ID=44 - How to park a domain
Warning: Parking the domain name will delete all files in your web space, all your email and all
configuration.
Adding your domain to your new hosting account:
* Sign up for a new hosting account with you desired specifications at
http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/hosting/
* Once the new account is set up you can contact our customer services team on
support@fasthosts.co.uk or call us on 0870 8883600 to request the old account to be closed, don't
forget to include your owner password when requesting your account to be closed and just include
the reason for cancellation.
If you want to do all this over the phone then you can have a word with our sales department who
will do this for you, they can be contact on the same number with the sales option after 09:00
Monday to Friday.
We don't document any server configuration details to customers I'm afraid but you can confirm
details of this nature with us again in the future when needed.

They don't mention a lot of things. Like when they change stuff that
breaks scripts without telling anyone. The latest thing was when a
bunch of mail scripts stopped working. Didn't know about it until the
client complained.
I wouldn't have an account with them.

That client was me....

Dear Robert.
I think you are having these problems because of a slight change we made to our systems recently.
This change was to cut down on the amount of Spam that passes through our systems each day.
It is now mandatory to use the ini_set command to hardwire the sendmail_from variable.
You must now include the following piece of text in your script...
ini_set ("sendmail_from", address@tom.com)
Reply from me...
This is the problem, thanks. Question is, where do you document these changes so I can find
out about them without waiting for major email issues to occur?
Reply from them...
Dear Robert.
Unfortunately, this change was not documented anywhere.
We did not make all of our customers aware of the change because it was only going to affect a
very small proportion of them. If you would like further information on this change, please don't
hesitate to call during office hours and speak to one of the 1st Line Team Leaders... they will be
happy to offer any advice required.
I thanked them a lot for losing a months worth of service and a few thousand pounds of business.
> I wouldn't have an account with them.
I did have to think VERY hard before I moved another account to them. The problem is that
when they work they are great, pity the do occasionally show up to be ass holes.

I asked about converting the domain and they said, no, but you can get another...
They then go on to say...
As you will be moving the domain to a new account type then you will receive
a full refund for the hosting that you have paid as the account has only been open for a w
They didn't answer my questions about what else will/will not work after the transfer.
I feel even they do not know what services ar actually working on any particular server group.
They are trying to be helpful, but still struggling with the concept of answering a direct
question.

Yeah that was it.
Their Linux servers seem to work just fine.
