I know! You'd think gmail would have a more professional "hiring
division".
</sarcasm>
By the way, does anyone else here use rentacoder? Has anyone had any
luck with it?
Just curious because it seems that the buyers never pick a coder so the
bids just hang there forever. Plus everyone is competing with people in
foreign countries willing to work for $15 a w . That is compounded by
buyers that want something for next to nothing. Seriously there are
thousends of requests on there for "MySpace clones" with a max bid
amount of $50 and a 16 day deadline. That's actually pretty but if
someone were you create a MySpace clone you could make a small fortune
selling just the licenses to these people.

Yes, I have used them in the past.
They are very cheap and very professional. It takes a while to find the
right coder, but it is well worth it in the end.

Yes, it is a problem. But good coders will charge a bit more.

Amongst those bids there is some serious bidding going on for more realistic
business plan/projects.

I noticed that the buyers in the meduim to large businesses categories
are ussually much more reasonable. I'm glad the site offers filters to
remove the "lesser" categories. The filter is a really great feature.
Even so I think most coders are forced to bit way under what they feel
is a fair price for the project. I find myself working for less than $5
and hour on rentacoder just to get my offers accepted and that is with
certifications and a portfolio. Off rentacoder I'm bringing in $20 an
hour or more with the only catch being the requirement that I commute.
Also, one of the things I really dislike is the expertrating
integration. For one thing the certs offered by expertrating are way
too inexpensive ($10 on average) and their tests are trivial. For
example I completed the XHTML certification in 7 minutes and got a 95%
score making me an "Expert Level" professional. The tests allowed 40
minutes and does not restrict the user from cheating by using google or
other resources to find the answers. In my opinion this makes the
certifications a very poor measure of skill and ability. Worse yet I
don't think the buyers are aware of how easy and cheap the tests are to
pass. In the meantime I'm more than happy to shell out the $10 if it'll
get me more projects.
Just my $0.02.
