Author IIS vs Apache, PHP & MySQL on XP

I just bought my first XP machine, so I can install PHP and MySQL and
learn how to make a web page interact with a database.

I have instructions from TechRepublic that look very thorough showing
how to install them PHP and MySQL on XP using IIS.

I read a lot about using apache but never got it to work right on my old
Win98SE machines.

I'd like to get away from MS if possible, I was wondering what people
here thought about using IIS/Apache.

TIA,
Mike

Hi Mike,

a fast and easy installation of PHP with Apache, MySQL etc is provided
by Apachefriends.org (http://www.apachefriends.org/).

SO you can get away from MS and will have easy access to a common used
environment.

Roy

Not tried IIS, I have for windows installed phpdev which gets Apache, PHP
and MySql working out the box plus a few other goodies.

probably only divantages of IIS are that there is no .htaccess
ability and some crazy permission system.
Use apache :)

Or best, use GNU/Linux instead WinXP (though don't override anything)

Have you used Apache, and if so how would you compare the two? Which one
do you use now?

Thanks,

Hi Roy,

That helped a lot, I installed XAMPP (instead of WAMP, it looked like it
has more features) and now I have Apache, MySQL and Perl, the control
panel says they're working... the installer worked flawlessly, perfect
for ignorant beginners!

Thanks very much,
Mike
