Hi,

I'd like to start getting into learning PHP.
Do I need to install php?

By the way, my ISP doesn't have php installed for me to use with my
included web space ( i don't have a domain).

How can I best get started with php?

Thanks,
George

Well it will have to be installed on at least one of them. If you
install it on your own machine you will have to run apache server too.
That's not hard - you can get complete self installing packages (see
www.firepages.com.au ) However, unless you have PHP on your webspace,
you won't be able to use anything you write other than locally.

Do some online tutorials.

Actually, PHP will run with just about any mainstream webserver on hardware
from PDA's to mainframes.

Unfortunately OP didn't say what type of systems he has access too. IMHO
apache is overkill for a development / play machine, however there are
plenty of packaged versions which simplify the install/config - some also
do PHP as well.

I'd definitely advise installing it on a development machine. Most people
with any programming experience find PHP relatively easy to learn
(...mastering it takes a little longer). The PHP manual is excellent for
*reference*. I would recommend buying a book when you're first starting
though - web tutorials are of variable quality, usually too short to get a
feel for the subject and you end up getting by the differing
approaches to writing a program. But once you've got the basics, there is a
lot of material out there, and some of it is good!

http://www.aprelium.com/ <----------- Get their ABYSS Web server. Eats
less than one MB of memory. Very lite, easy to configure. Supports PHP and
MySQL (if you need it).

Steps:

1) Download file from this page (of available servers):
http://us2.php.net/get/php-5.0.3-in...e/from/a/mirror
2) Install.
3) Download webserver: http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/download.php
4) Install.
5) Read how easy to configure it to use with PHP:

Thank you all for your responses, to my question.
Lots of good info to help get me started, as I've checked out your
suggested sites.
