| Yes, sites linking to your site does make a difference to search
engines (SEs) like Google, but that's not the only factor. "Cheating"
SEs can only prove to get your site banned from the respective SE, and
don't think they can't/won't do that; they can and will.
Your best bet is to do what's called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
This includes, but is not limited to, properly formatting your page so
SEs can read them (Not too heavy on the JavaScript, and try to stay
close to HTML 3.2, as that's what spiders can understand best). Also,
place Meta tags in your Head section, such as keywords, description,
and robots. Limit both keywords and description to 255 characters;
keywords are seperated by commas and can contain phrases (i.e.
"fruits, oranges, citrus fruits, etc"). Do not repeat keywords, it
actually makes your site look bad to the spiders.
As for the content/body, keep it relavent to the keywords and
description. In the content/body you can, and are highly recommended
to, repeat your keywords as many times as you can--coherently.
Remember, trying to cheat and fool the spiders will get you banned,
and that's counter-productive...
I could go on with many, many more tips, but since this is a PHP
group, and I'm way off topic, I'll stop here and just suggest to learn
more you do your research. One place, that I feel is a good head
start, is a LiveJournal community:
http://www.livejournal.com/community/seo/ . There is a very indepth
how-to listed for June 9th, 2004|10:50am. Read it; you will be better
off for it. And, lastly, good luck in getting your rankings (honestly,
I would hope). :-)
