I've read the FAQ at Zend.com but have a question. If I pass the PHP 4
exam, does it expire?

I am NOT comfortable with OOP yet - that is why I want to take the PHP 4
exam. I use PHP 5 now but not the OO funcationality.

Your thoughts?

Are you sure you need the certification? Hardly any future employer will
care for it AFAIK. They are much more interested in past work then this
particular certification, assuming they've even heard of it.

I am not sure but am getting calls for part-time consulting gigs and want a
cert to help marketing.

Well, it's quite cheap, so if you think it'll help, go ahead. I haven't met
the contracter who gave a damn.
You know what's frightening:
- 49% hold other certification credentials

LESS then a half of the participants have any certification whatsoever in
whatsoever....

In my experienxe contracters are looking for:
- either someone who can prove his experience by earlier projects,
- or (for the long term) someone with a finished IT eduction, in which case
they normally don't even care wther the person knows PHP at all, as it is
such an easy language to learn for someone with the proper prerequisites.

Unfortunately, I still don't know wether it expires. But hey: weird
thought: let's ask the people who give out the certification:

No the certification never expirse. Once you pass the exam you are always
considered a php certified engineer BUT of course you are certified only for
php 4 so the certification can effectively become outdated.

If you do wish to become certified with php 4 I suggest you hurry as the
last I heard the plan was for zend to stop the exam for that version in the
new year unless there was enough demand. You of course cannot count on the
demand being there and the exam being continued unless an official
announcement is made.

The best person to ask would be Dhwani Vahia who is the education program
manager at zend. She can be contacted at dhwaniATzendDOTcom (replace the
obvious)

I'd start with Object Oriented Programming and leave the certificate. I
never encountered an employer who asked for a PHP certificate, but
nearly all of them ask for object-oriented experience. Often, an object
oriented background is considered more important than specific PHP
knowledge.
Mind you, a huge lot of those employers do not or hardly use any objects
in their code, but they nonetheless ask for the knowledge when
recruiting personnel.

IMHO, certification of any type is only good for the first few years out of
college. After that, it is the experience that will get you a job. Until you
reach 10-15 years, then you are just too expensive and they "lay you off" and
look for the next college graduate with a certification.

I think another valid question to ask yourself is do you want the client who is
impressed by a certificate. Looking at the sample exam, what the test shows is
that you have an in depth knowledge of the type of information contained in the
PHP manual. Basically it tests syntax and vocabulary. It doesn't mean that you
can actually program in PHP, or any other language. You can't test for that for
PHP or any other language, including Java. Language certifications are a joke.
Spend your energies getting to know the language better. Write more code. In the
long run you'll serve your clients' interests better, and that is always good
for business.

No.

PHP 4 exam has OOP-related questions, too... It's just that
they are specific to OOP as implemented in PHP 4.
