PHP Smarty Templates - caching templates

So I have a master template that will include several child templates.
I would like these child templates to be cached. Is it possible to
cache the child templates rather than or in addition to the master
template? Or would it be better to create a php file that includes
these child templates using the http protocol so that these child
templates could then be cached?

Any opinions would be appreciated.
