Thanks - I've had a look at what you have mounted and I'm not sure it solves
my problem.

Firstly, your setup assumes that apache is being used - I'm on IIS, but
could move to apache if that really does solve the problem.

It's not just the templates I want to share - its the php scripts as well.
Ideally, I'd like an additional line in Smarty's configuration that asks
where the php scripts are.

I have tried a workaround by putting a short php file in my client directory
for each php file called from the 'shared' folder. This short file calls a
file that holds the paths and then calls the shared file for that page.
Great in theory - but doesn't work.

Oh well, I'll keep digging.
