Try nvu -the evolution of the old mozilla/netscape composer- at nvu.com

I just did before posting the request - it doesn't even want to open
..tpl files!

I, too, must admit that I was a bit underwhelmed with nVU. Great if
you're making HTML, XHTML, and CSS. Not so great if you're working with
server-side scripting and/or templates.

More a "web designers" tool than a "web programmers" tool.

At this point, I'm still doing most of my editing in Arachnophilia
(version 4) when I'm on Windows (IOW: at work) and VIM when I'm on
Linux. (I know there are better code editors for Linux. I'm just using
in a shell so often I don't think about them.)

Ever considered Eclipse (www.eclipse.org)? AS far as I am concerned, it
rocks on both Win and Linux. Plus there is a PHP plugin.

Only a bit? :))

VIM is what I'm using all the time. (There's a neat Windows version also).

Judging by the screenshots, Arachnophilia is not a WYSIWYG editor?
(Though it looks nice)

Actually, I am planning on trying Eclipse. Not entirely sure why I
haven't yet.

Give it a try. And get the PHP Eclipse
(http://www.alfersoft.com.ar/phpeclipse/) that goes with it.

Whoops. I went off-topic I guess since I don't use a WYSIWYG editor.
Arachnophilia 4 does have the ability to do a live preview though where
you can see your source changes in the preview window almost as you make
them. Not sure about Arachnophilia 5.
