I found it went something like this.

1. take a look at smarty, say 'ooo thats nice' a few times.
2. play with it a bit, write a smarty subclass.
3. feel pleased with oneself.
4. have a look at the stuff in PEAR and elsewhere,
5. continue looking elsewhere...
6. slowly get better aquainted Smarty.
7. smile to oneself
8. keep a look out for alternatives...

Smarty - a really good php 'template' system that
doesn't use the word 'template' or 'php' in its name :-)

Smarty pros:

1. simple/stable interface
2. mature
3. self-contained (no dependencies)
4. plugins/filters are a doddle
5. good cache/compile control
6. good source&user documentation
7. strong developer base
8. large user base
9. has its own php.net subdomain
10. cheap at twice the price.

Smarty cons:

1. not php5y enough
2. er.. does slight difference of opinion regarding CS count? ;-)
