Author Form/Template question: how to set button colors when form loads

I have a form with custom image buttons. When user clicks on the image,
it changes color to indicate that it has been selected. I save the
selections to values in a mysql database.

When I want to edit the record that I saved, I need to read the values
from the database and re-create the selection state of the button(s).
Essentially, I need to change color of the appropriate buttons.

I am comfortable in using $form->setDetaults(...) to set default values of
normal elements but how would I set the color of a button at this stage of
the presentation process.

Many thanks -

Phil
