I found a fix:

Disable Turck mmcache PHP accelerator. I was running mmcache 2.4.6.

Hopefully this will be fixed in a later version of mmcache - there hasn't
been a full release since PHP5 appeared. I've head of people using the 2.4.7
that's in CVS but as yet unreleased.
