I tried RC1 and your .pearrc file check does not work.
Warning: PEAR configuration file '/.pearrc' does not exist in /usr/lib/php5=
/share/pear/PEAR/Info.php on line 211

That's ok because pear finds the file anyway, the system file. While I coul=
d use pear_info until 1.70rc1 without problems, it doesn't work now.

By the way, you should use PEAR::raiseError instead of trigger_error.
