Problem with WebInstaller after go-pear install

Hi all - hope I'm posting in the right place.

Have uploaded go-pear to my host and run through the install steps, everything went fine to 100% completion

However, when I try to access PEAR/PEAR/WebInstaller.php I get the error

Fatal Error: Class pear_frontend: Cannot inherit from undefined class pear in mypathtopear/PEAR/Frontend.php on line 49

I have followed the instructions on the go pear completion page and added

php_value include_path .:/mysystempath/www/go-pear/PEAR

to the .htaccess file.

Sorry if this is likely to be something really obvious - googling gets lots of pages with the error but no actual discussions of it ;)
