Three versions of Net_NNTP or of the PEAR repository?

No, I don’t want to maintain more that 1.5 version of a package. I’m
currently pushing for at new stable release (v1.1) by moving mature-enough
features from the alpha to the beta release and doing some needed
modifications (misc. rewrites and unfortunately a few minor corrections to
the current beta API).

In case of the later possibility: Yes, perhaps, if need be. Starting over
at each major PHP release makes sense to me. By starting over I mean
starting with an empty channel/repository, and then reconsider what could
be directly copied, what have to be rewritten, and what should not be
included in the new version. Packages in the new channel would of cause be
able to require packages from the older channels for as long another
E_STRICT situation doesn’t prevent it. As a general rule I think it would
be wise to make it clear that a certain channel is only supposed to
support a certain major PHP version, but if future major versions is
backward compatible enough, the channel could also be used on future major
PHP releases. As such PPP should never be used in the current PEAR
channel, but should be a requirement in its successor...
