Author HTML_Quickform_Controller: Validate on next, not on back

Hi Folks,

Using HTML_Quickform_Controller for a multipage wizard, I find that
client side validation has a problem:

When using server side validation, the fields are validated for "Next"
but not for "Back" which is as it should be.

When using client side validation, the generated Javascript is
unconditionally applied in an "onsubmit" which means that if you fail to
fill out the required fields, you can't back up.

Is this a known problem? Is there a workaround?
