It does not, unless you specify /usr/local as prefix. But when and
where did you get this message?

What do you mean? There is two things, the PEAR install, go-pear, and
the PEAR packages installers, pear_frontend_web.

On the config page, I set the install directory to:
/home/betterco/pear_local
Then, told all the installer front end to be written to:
/home/betterco/public_html/_pear/index.php
Both directories had permissions set to 777. The install went fine, and af=
terwareds, I followed the
link to the Web installer page. =20
The URL that I am taken to is:
http://my.webaddress.com/_pear/index.php?enableJS=3D1
And, the page simply displays:
Error
could not create directory: /usr/local/etc
All of the links throw the same error--the package management, list all pac=
kages, and configure
options.

I guess I don't know what I mean here. I downloaded "go-pear.php", and was=
trying to self-diagnose
the problem before sending anything to the list--but, I had no luck. I was=
curious if there was a
relationship between the two--my real problem is above.
