The mirror gr.php.net is up and running again without any problems.....
Please advice if there is anything else we could do besides the instructions on the site about becoming a mirror.

http://gr.php.net/manual/en/ref.var.php this page should be returning
"variable handling functions".

to fix it (hint: remove the apache2 default 'var' handler) :)
