I vote for pulling the text parts. Modifying multi-lingual pages in
separate directories is a big pain.

Yeah, I have some ideas for this one including a translation queue of
some sort that would make it easy for people to contribute short
translations without having to know anything about the underlying
mechanisms. That could even be used for user notes if it worked well.
Let me think about it for a bit.

We can start simple, with something that works for the
main site, but could be extended for the notes. The
notes management has improved over the years, but
there is still room to make it better. One thing that
might be useful is the old idea of having a mechanism
for an editor to express his/her interest in a
particular sections of the manual (e.g. the MySQL
section) and then get a notification when there is a
new note there. That way, if we tackle the wholesale
translation of the all notes (which might be a bit
daunting), this could be better spread among
everybody.

Jim wrote some alert code some time ago which would require some work to
get working on the master.php.net site so that users can subscribe to
the alerts. It would be quite useful.

It would be nice. I saw something similar at
https://services.google.com/tc/Welcome.html
and it can be used pretty well.

I am against translating or even contributing user notes in other
languages. In my eyes, user notes are of two kind:

1. Useful which should be incorporated in the English manual and then
translated to other versions.

2. Useless which should be rejected or deleted without taking any
further action.

Before someone choose the appropriate kind, notes can be useful in all
languages (most in English) but other languages make it slower to
take a final action.

Oh yeh! Some years ago (around 5/6) I've participated in Google's
translation program and their interface is really good and simple. It has
just a couple of text boxes in each you can enter the text. Then all the
work of validating and assigning work is done at the server. The user just
needs a browser.
This would be the perfect tool even for phpdoc stuff, but I'm currently
lacking free time to work on it.

We currently don't even moderate (aka delete and incorporate the usefull
notes) the English notes, so having other languages will only fill our work
queues.
