I can't say I'm very experienced with current stress tools. I played with
a couple not long ago. One s/w I tried is OpenSTA
(http://www.opensta.org/). I didn't get to work with it very much, but it
looks to be a very capable (and free, open source) tool.

At work, our applications team uses a very pricey commercial package
called Rational Robot, and from what I've seen of it, it looks like
OpenSTA can compete very well with it.

A website I found useful was:
http://www.opensourcetesting.org/performance.php
They've got links and descriptions to several performance and load test
tools.

Good luck.
