PHP Installation - newbie ?

I am trying to configure Apache/Mysql/PHP (1st time) on Fedora Core 3.
I have compiled all three and all three worked fine with the exception
of PHP. I needed to recompile PHP as I did not --with-apxs2.
My problem is that once I recompiled PHP, I cannot access any docs or
scripts in htdocs. I can bring up the default apache page,but not any
pages that are in htdocs. It seems as though the default root
directory was changed when I recompiled PHP. Any thoughts?
