My proposal had nothing to do with the search engine. I still think that the
off-line tools of livedocs could use some help. They are magical and
shouldn't be (and way too phpdoc specific). My proposal was to make them
docbook generic (and probably porting them to one of the new xml extensions
of PHP 5).
BTW, we haven't received any livedocs proposal yet.

Doesn't that require alterations to the docbook too. For instance <function> element is magical (and specific to phpdoc) in that it
also creates a link to the relevant functions' page, I believe?

Yep, of course we have done some customizations to the DSSSL/XSL sheets, but
as those languages allow a somewhat easy way to modify how things are
presented, livedocs should be extensible as well.
