Author Process Paths With Spaces

How can I get my script to process spaces in the path. I'm executing the system command "dir" on a Windows platform. I've tried some various methods of supplying Unicode for the spaces. Is a space %20% ? Also, does Perl need to know something special for processing unicode? Thanks
