I look askance at those who would s to promote the cause of software
engineering via the vehicle of irreverent filk:
http://www.c2.com/cgi/wiki?DontPlanDesigns
To begin with, this poem aligns an illegitimate dichotomy between the haves
and the have nots with Reggae music's legitimate dichotomy. The powers of
Babylon (the Establishment; the Nobility) are presented as both wicked and
inept at software engineering. They expoit aspects of their station to
impose upon "coders" the designs they are ordered to code. The hero - the
Conquering Lion of Zion - is the individualist who does his own thing with
his designs.
So, here's the refrain: "I do not document I only test code and refactor".
To tease the representatives of Babylon, the poem exploits an early
misconception of Agile development: That teams never document, and that they
never work on any support roles except implementation.
When arrant nonsense like this masquerades as effective debate, it distracts
pundits from the real message from those who purport their software
processes to be "Agile".
