DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
The Department of Computer Science has a vibrant and collegial
environment, consisting of 17 full-time faculty members and 10
supporting staff. The Department offers BSc (Hons) in Computing Studies
(Information Systems), BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, MSc in IT
Management, MPhil (by research), and PhD degrees. It presently has
approximately 300 undergraduate students and 50 research students and
project staff.
The Department places a strong emphasis on both quality education and
scholarly research/services, and has reached a significant milestone
where its educational programs are not only innovative but also
accessible, and its major areas of research strength are well recognized
and supported. The Department has enjoyed, and will continue to have,
the necessary resources as well as the conducive environment for its
steady development.
HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department welcomes qualified applicants and nominees for the
position of the Head of the Department. The candidates should have the
qualities and track records as an academic leader in teaching and
research.
Reporting to the Dean of Faculty of Science, the Head is a member of
academic faculty who is responsible for envisioning and steering the
direction of the Department's long-term development, including the
development of its teaching, research, and faculty profiles, and shall
plan and develop various resources and opportunities for faculty, staff,
and students to work towards such a direction. The Head is also
responsible for establishing and maintaining the smooth operations of
the Department, and at the same time offering his/her services to
communities, both inside and outside the university.
The candidate should have an earned PhD degree in Computer Science
or a related field, and has extensive experiences in actively engaging in as
well as leading academic teaching and sponsored research programs.
He/she is expected to be a renowned scholar in his/her field of research
at the regional/international level. The appointee will hold a
concurrent academic position and will be provided with a monthly
responsibility allowance for the Headship appointment.
PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
The Department of Computer Science s s outstanding applicants for
the Professor and/or Associate Professor positions (depending on
qualifications, past experience, and track records) starting Fall 2006.
Duties and responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate teaching,
teaching program management, high-impact research, and professional or
departmental/institutional services. Candidates are expected to closely
collaborate with other colleagues in research and teaching in this
collegial environment.
Applicants should have extensive knowledge and/or experience in
successfully developing teaching and research programs as well as
carrying out funded projects in at least one of the following areas:
information systems theories and practice, IT management,
bioinformatics, information security, and digital media communications.
Exceptional applicants in other areas of computer science and
information systems, such as intelligent systems, pattern recognition,
and networking and multimedia will also be considered.
Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in computer science,information
systems, or a related field, and demonstrate a strong commitment to the
undergraduate and graduate teaching in computer science and/or
information systems at all levels, with a track record in innovative
research and high-impact publications, and evidence of ability to bid
for and pursue externally funded research programs.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT: Starting salary will be commensurate
with qualifications and experience. Benefits include contribution by
the
University to a retirement benefits scheme and/or a gratuity payable
upon satisfactory completion of contract, annual leave, medical & dental
benefits for appointee and family and housing assistance where
applicable. Re-appointment thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.

VISITING PROFESSORSHIP
The Department of Computer Science invites applications for its Visiting
Professor positions. During the period of visiting, candidates are
expected to teach one subject per semester, and conduct advanced
research jointly with at least one of the faculty members in the
Department.
Applicants should have extensive knowledge and/or experience in at least
one of the following areas: intelligent systems, pattern recognition,
networking and multimedia, information systems theories and practice, IT
management, bioinformatics, information security, and digital media
communications. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in computer
science, information systems, or a related field, a track record in
innovative research and high- impact publications and demonstrate a
strong commitment to the undergraduate and graduate teaching.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT: Appointment will be made on a fixed term
6-month contract basis, renewable subject to mutual agreement. Salary will
be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The
contract period is expected to cover either of the two academic
semesters (Semester1: September to December; Semester2: January to May).
