Hi,
I really respect this group and all it's smartness. I have a friend who has
never owned a computer and she is looking into a Apple. Is there an opinion
Apple vs. Vista (Dell or HP) computer for a first time user. I have a Dell
and do not know much about the Apple~

Thanks in advanced~

WOW what a can of opinionated worms you just opened. I have used both
and I can't say that I have a favorite one way or the other. A
computer is a computer and each of them has certain strengths and
weaknesses. Over the years I have gone through many of each and my
preference leans toward the Vista simply because of availability of
software. But the whole argument is now a wash since Apple is
producing an Intel based Apple with capabilities to run BOTH operating
systems at the same time. Its the best of both worlds.

Actually with Vista you now has less compatable software.
I am hearing from a lot of people how their games won't work now or some
other piece of hardware.

Thanks for the help~ I herd that the programs were not working on the Vista
because they have to find the patch. If you get the correct patch then all
is well with Vista~ that is what I herd anyway~
Thanks~

Well good luck and don't hold your breath for a "patch."

You (really she) have a real problem here. If she's never owned (or used)
a computer, then she doesn't 'know' what she is looking for. Ask her why
she is looking at an Apple. What does she think she is going to do with
it. Something I'd recommend is that she buy a used box from a dealer that
handles used but warranted gear (or at least with return priviledges) and
let her play with it for 1-2 months and if she doesn't like it, take it
back and get a different one. I hate to see people spend $700-1500 (on up
to 3000) on something and they don't know what they have or they barely
use it. Start with a $200-300 box and get some experience for her. She
might even benefit from 6-12 months of experience with one of each.

As is typical with new operating system releases, including the latest
releases of the Apple operating system, software that is not well
written is likely to have trouble with new operating systems. We have
a mix of oerating systems where I work now and we had substantial
problems when we did the last upgrade of the Apple OS. Most good
software vendors will offer upgrades or patches to correct these
issues.

She does not know what she is getting~ At all! Someone told her that the
apple was the best. I told her that I don't know much about apples but if
you talk to ten different people that you will get ten different answers and
it would be a good idea to take the time to educate herself and do some
research before she decided. I suggested going to the library and using it
there first. That is a great suggestion to get a box and learn a little
first.
She was blown away when I said I will Google it~ she did not know what that
meant and laughed at the word!!!
Thanks again~

Well, here is another suggestion for her benefit: whatever whoever you are
who wants to get a box, you figure out who your best friends are and ask
what kind of box they have. And, the reason is that those people are going
to be pestered to death with questions when problems come up. If her best
friends all have Appple/Macs, then tell her to get the A/M. Everyone who
starts from zero has to learn a lot of things and will have to have
someone to give them help. Me? When I first got into these things 25 years
ago, all the people I knew who were into Apple/Macs were a bunch of snobs.
All the people I knew who were into PCs/IBMs were helpful. So, I went
PC/IBM. Now, my wife wants to learn this stuff and she comes to me every
half hour with questions, problems, trouble. You get tired of it after a
while, but its the only way to learn: learn by doing. Learn by 'crash and
burn.' Me, PCs and Apples are just different kinds of hardware/software.
Its nice if you can do both, but in the end its just one list of
advantages/divantages against another list of different
advantages/divantages.

And, my background also includes running old IBM's OS/2, BSD, and various
versions of Linux on 486 architectures.

Good luck, and don't forget to look for help on the comp.os.mac.misc and
other comp.*.* newsgroups.
