Call centre jobs blow
DOZENS of call centre jobs are to be switched from Glasgow to India
amid growing fears that further posts will go the same way.
The Lloyds TSB Bank is transferring 1000 call centre jobs to India and
today union chiefs revealed that 65 were being switched from Glasgow.
Steve Tatlow of the Lloyds TSB Group Union warned the move was "laying
the groundwork for hundreds more jobs to follow."
The bank already has 1500 call centre workers in India and plans to
continue off-shoring jobs despite union opposition and a petition
signed by nearly 500,000 customers.
Meanwhile, 55 workers at a chocolate factory in Ayrshire received a
jobs boost when it was revealed that food giant NestlŽ Rowntree had
lifted the threat of closure at its Girvan plant.
Instead, a sister plant in Ireland will close and another 10 jobs are
to be created at Girvan.
Enterprise Minister Jim Wallace said: "The reliable and skilled
workers at the Girvan facility were a major factor in the firm's
decision."
He also revealed that tens of thousands of pounds in grants had been
offered to the firm to keep the Ayrshire plant open.
