Sure - theory as taught doesn't come from direct experience, it comes
from others' experience. When someone (A) has direct experience of
something, and then someone (B) who has more experience and has a more
complete theory comes along and explains it (to A), one (A) can
understand them (B) far more than if one (A) had no experience at all.
That's what I meant to say. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

The statement about "aimless experimentation" just rubbed me up the
wrong way, sorry!
I've just never seen it outside a school or college, sorry.
