And, finally, a forum that discusses software testing, which does not offer
automated unit tests as the vanguard technique (or doesn't even mention
them!) is part of the problem.

I'm not sure I would put it quite that way. In many contexts, automated
unit tests may well be nothing more than a distraction. Not all
organizations are at the same level of maturity, nor do all organizations
share the same needs.
However, I would suggest that failure to mention automated unit tests in an
FAQ purportedly about software testing is an indication that the intended
audience for such a FAQ must be relatively immature shops who haven't yet
gotten a clue about the software process.
